Half-hardy annual

This bushy annual, with its solid mass of funnel-shaped blooms in many vivid colours, puts on a splendid show all summer long if grown in fertile moist soil in a sunny position. It is useful in bedding schemes and containers and long-lasting as a cut flower.

Popular varieties

Numerous varieties have been developed from Nemesia strumosa. ‘Carnival Mixed’ produces compact plants 23cm Oin) high which become smothered with a mixture of brightly coloured flowers. ‘Snow Princess’ grows 20cm (8in) high and has glistening white, yellow-throated flowers. ‘Suttons Sparklers’ is a mixture of bicoloured and tricoloured flowers. The plants reach 20cm (8in) high. ‘Triumph Red’, up to 25cm (10in) tall, is compact and early-flowering, with bright red flowers.

Sow the seeds under glass in early spring, at a temperature of 15°C (59°F), just covering them with compost. Prick out the seedlings into boxes and harden off before planting out in late spring. Ideally grow nemesia in a fertile moist soil in full sun.
